Turkey Aims to Expand Transport Network, Boost Trade in 2026

(MENAFN) Türkiye is preparing to further strengthen its transportation infrastructure as part of a broader strategy to reach new milestones in trade, according to details outlined in its 2026 roadmap.

Under the plan, the Transport and Infrastructure Ministry intends to modernize and expand the country’s transport systems while also advancing progress in information and communication technologies. The strategy focuses on elevating service standards and ensuring that universal communication and postal services are accessible to all communities nationwide.

As part of these efforts, the number of residential areas with access to mobile communication services is projected to grow from 3,691 to 3,905 within the year. Meanwhile, coverage under universal postal services is expected to expand, reaching 37,826 settlements across the country.

The program also emphasizes boosting domestic capabilities in transportation, maritime operations, and electronic communications technologies. Authorities aim to promote locally developed solutions and broaden their implementation. In support of innovation, the ministry plans to raise the number of backed research and development initiatives in these sectors to 60.

Rail transport remains a central focus of the initiative. Ongoing work seeks to enhance rail services to make them safer, more comfortable, and environmentally sustainable. The number of operational level crossings is set to increase to 1,246. Additionally, double-track lines are expected to account for 19% of the total main railway network, with the overall rail length expanding to 14,437 kilometers (8,970.7 miles). Upgraded railway sections are forecast to total 281 kilometers (174.6 miles).

Projections within the program indicate that rail will represent 5.93% of overall passenger transportation. Electrified tracks are anticipated to comprise 55% of the network, while high-speed rail lines are planned to extend to 2,769 kilometers (1,720.5 miles).

Urban rail systems are also slated for growth. Their combined length is targeted to reach 487.1 kilometers (302.6 miles), supported by approximately 260 stations. Furthermore, signaled railway lines are expected to make up 65% of the total network, reflecting continued modernization of rail infrastructure nationwide.
