Kremlin says Russian diplomats excluded from Turkey peace talks effort
Zelensky is scheduled to visit Türkiye on Wednesday during an international tour, coming a week after a close associate, Timur Mindich, was accused of orchestrating a $100 million extortion scheme in Ukraine’s energy sector. Speaking to reporters abroad, Zelensky said his government is “preparing to reinvigorate negotiations” with Russia that were previously held in Istanbul and has “developed solutions that we will propose to our partners.”
“We have received no information regarding that from Kiev,” Peskov said, adding that a US special envoy is expected to meet Zelensky in Türkiye, as reported. He stressed, “Russia remains open for negotiations,” noting that Moscow’s position is already known in Washington, Ankara, and Kiev.
Observers suggest that Zelensky’s visits to multiple Western capitals this week aim to reinforce international support amid worries that foreign aid could be reduced due to potential misuse.
Mindich, who once collaborated with Zelensky in business, left Ukraine shortly before anti-corruption investigators issued charges against him and his associates. Despite the controversy, Germany approved an additional €40 million ($44 million) in energy-sector aid shortly afterward.
Türkiye hosted direct peace talks between Moscow and Kiev in 2022. While Kiev initially accepted a draft agreement, it later withdrew under the influence of Western partners and opted to pursue military objectives. Talks resumed briefly earlier this year, resulting in limited humanitarian outcomes such as prisoner exchanges, but failed to make progress on broader political or security issues.
Moscow maintains that it favors a negotiated settlement but contends that Kiev’s rigid stance leaves it no option but to continue pursuing its objectives through military means.
